Chapter Twenty-Two

Elenora entered the ballroom and found the witches crouched around the chandelier, studying its mangled carcass of twisted metal and shards of crystal while Alex hovered protectively nearby.

“If our perp acts up again, this thing could be worse than a nail bomb,” Tom whispered to them.

“My thoughts exactly,” Claire-Lune whispered back. She considered the pile of debris for a moment before moving a hand over it in a clockwise motion. “This should slow down any funny business.”

“How’s the air?” Wren asked Juniper before turning an inquisitive gaze on Yukiko and Elenora.

“Seems normal to me,” Juniper answered.

“Same,” Yukiko agreed.

Elenora assessed the air pressure and detected no suspicious thickness. “It feels fine to me too.”

“Perfect. Let’s get rid of this thing, then,” Claire-Lune declared about the chandelier.

Alex grabbed the chain, endeavoring to drag the whole thing out of the house by himself. Tom jumped in to help, and within seconds, Juniper moved her hands, providing an invisible push and lift to the broken light fixture with the countless sharp edges, helping them move it without cutting themselves.

They hauled it out the door, and Elenora watched their progress from the front window once they got outside. In no time, the formerly dazzling chandelier decorated the front lawn. Juniper considered it, hands on her hips.

“I’ll help you guys throw it in the construction dumpster at the side of the house. But we’ll have to make transport look inconspicuous,” she told Tom and Alex. While the residential street was quiet, it was daytime on a Sunday, and people were home.

Wren joined them. “I’ll throw a cloaking spell over it. Then, Junie, you can take it from there.”

Elenora heard activity in the room behind her and turned. Yukiko had returned with a broom and a garbage bag.

Claire-Lune waved her hand dismissively. “Never mind the broom. Just hold the bag open.”

Elenora helped with the bag, and in less than a minute, the twins magically gathered all the shards, dust, and fragments left on the floor and sent them flying into the bag. This nifty—and highly practical—trick amazed Elenora. She hated cleaning with a passion and wished she could trade her psychic abilities for that one.

Serena chuckled. “I know what you’re thinking. We’re just taking a shortcut ’cause the clock is ticking. But when we’re at home, we still have to clean with elbow grease. Trust me.”

“Why?”

“Because this spell takes a lot of effort and concentration. To do it on a larger scale would be like running a marathon—as in sweating buckets. Ugh! No thanks. It’s more efficient to do things the old-fashioned way.” She made a face. “That said, I still hope someone will soon come up with better and easier cleaning spells.” She arched a brow at Wren coming back into the room and gave her a pleading look. “Right, Wren?”

“Don’t look at me!” Wren laughed.

“If it were up to Serena,” Claire-Lune said to Elenora, “the OPO’s entire R&D department would focus their efforts on making her life easier, starting with making food appear on
